Oasis Productions Aims to Mainstream Catholic TV
Catholic television is going mainstream this year as entrepreneur Aaron McWilliams, owner of the online Catholic bookstore olivetreeonline.com, launches Oasis Productions, a company dedicated to creating Catholic-focused programs, from quiz shows to prime-time drama.
Over twenty new shows are planned, including reality TV, cartoons and kid shows, news, sitcoms and family-friendly dramas, as well as some educational series.
Rather than focusing exclusively on theology, these shows portray Catholics living their faith. Catholic America will explore all 177 Catholic dioceses across the country, exploring their history, culture and spirituality. Walking with Saints examines the day-in,-day-out lives of the saints and reveals the harsh realities of their world--in deserts and caves, on ocean voyages and pilgrimages. Rachael’s Army takes a light-hearted look at a "traditional" family of 13. For teens, an MTV-style program weaves music videos with heart-to-heart chats with the Christian artists about life, faith, and the music they create. Pre-schoolers learn catechetical lessons through a show involving songs and dance. McWilliams said he's even considering science fiction and other genres not normally associated with religious programming.
"Since no genre appeals to everyone, we want to develop a variety of programs in order to reach each person, regardless of their preferences, so they can see Catholicism in a new light," said McWilliams. McWilliams, who at 24, already owned an online bookstore containing over 30,000 products, has been working to build his team and gather supporters.
Rather than airing the line-up through its own network, Oasis plans to distribute its shows through Internet-streaming video, DVD clubs, book stores and existing television stations. Twenty-four stations and networks--including EWTN--have already expressed interest in broadcasting Oasis programs. The company might consider launching its own network at some point in the future, though. “Our mission is to spread the gospel through television, and however that’s best accomplished is fine with us,” McWilliams said, “We’re not concerned about having our name on a station, but we’re not opposed to having one, if that’s the best way to get the message of Christ out there.”
Oasis is in the pre-production phase for many of its shows: developing scripts, building the infrastructure and of course, fundraising. In addition to generating income through direct sales and corporate sponsorship, they are conducting a nationwide grassroots fundraising campaign. Production work is already underway.
